Tignes Ski Resort Guide
Snow-Sure Skiing at Altitude
Tignes, at 2,100m, is one of the Alps’ most snow-sure resorts, with a season stretching from early autumn to May.
Linked with Val d’Isère, it forms a vast 300km ski area served by an efficient lift system and two glaciers, Grande Motte (3,455m) and Pissaillas, ensuring reliable snow and near year-round skiing. No wonder Tignes is a favourite destination among Ski Line customers.
Three Villages, Fast Slope Access
Tignes’ villages, Val Claret, Le Lac and Le Lavachet, offer fast access to the slopes, with most accommodation ski-in/ski-out or close by.
For quick links to Val d’Isère, stay in Le Lac or Le Lavachet. If your focus is on skiing the Grande Motte glacier, Val Claret is the ideal base. Lower villages like Tignes 1800 and Les Brévières combine quieter settings with excellent lift connections.
A Long Season with Lively Energy
Tignes’ high altitude and glacier skiing make it one of the first resorts to open and last to close in the Alps.
Off the slopes, Tignes offers a sporty, energetic atmosphere with après-ski, family activities and plenty to do for groups of all kinds.
Eco-friendly
Tignes became the first ski resort to obtain the Green Globe Label in 2015. In 2021 they have applied to get an even higher accolade, the Flocon Vert Label, and it will discover late in 2022 if it has made the grade. Read more about eco-friendly ski holidays

THE SKIING
Tignes Skiing
Beginners Skiing In Tignes
Tignes offers four dedicated nursery slope areas in Val Claret, Le Lac, Le Lavachet, and Les Brévières, all served by easy lifts such as free magic carpets and beginner chairlifts near accommodation. The Claret Magic Carpet and beginner lifts are free of charge, allowing first-timers to gain confidence without buying a full lift pass.
The nursery slopes at Le Lac and Lavachet are free from through traffic, creating a safe environment for children and beginners.
Tignes’ “Ski Start” program provides a three-step progression on gentle snow fronts. Wide green runs like Le Bollin in Val Claret are ideal for practicing turns, while the slope in front of Le Rosset, although classified as blue, offers green-run ease.
English-speaking ski schools and mellow terrain round out Tignes’ appeal.
Intermediates Skiing In Tignes
At Ski Line, we regard Tignes as one of Europe’s premier destinations for intermediates, offering vast terrain and reliable snow.
The Palet and l’Aiguille Percée sector above Le Lac and Val Claret features scenic blues like Percée Neige and Corniche, often quieter and well-groomed.
The renowned “H” run is popular but meticulously maintained for smooth cruising. Runs from Aiguille Percée down to Tignes 1800 and Les Brévières offer breathtaking landscapes and a refreshing change of scenery.
The Grande Motte glacier ensures excellent snow conditions, while long reds such as Rimaye and Double M provide satisfying descents.
The efficient lift system connects the terrain seamlessly, and lower tree-lined runs to Les Brévières offer shelter during bad weather.
Advanced Skiing In Tignes
Advanced skiers have plenty to tackle in Tignes, starting with the steep, mogul-heavy black from Tovière to Tignes-le-Lac, a true test piece.
Le Sache descends 1,200m from l’Aiguille Percée through a scenic valley to Les Brévières, with the option to switch to a red run to avoid heavy moguls near the base. Other black pistes like Trolles and Silléné (a naturide ungroomed run) offer serious challenges.
The Col du Palet to Champagny and Peisey Nancroix route is scenic and moderately challenging, ideal for advanced skiers seeking less extreme terrain.
Off-piste opportunities abound, with classics like Grande Balme and Vallon de la Sache. Guided tours are recommended for technical descents such as Lavachet Wall or Mickey’s Ears couloirs.
Snowboarding and Freestyle in Tignes
Tignes is highly snowboard-friendly, with two terrain parks near Grattalu: a main Snowpark featuring medium to advanced jumps and an Easy Park for beginners.
The resort’s halfpipe, a rarity in France, attracts elite freestyle athletes and hosted the Winter X Games. Boardercross and natural terrain features enhance variety for freeriders. Most lifts are chairs or gondolas, minimising drag lift hassle (only a few glacier T-bars remain, often avoidable via the funicular).
Wide, treeless pistes are perfect for carving, and off-piste zones offer bowls and drops ideal for powder days.

NIGHTLIFE & APRÈS
Tignes Nightlife and Après Ski
Après ski
Tignes boasts one of the liveliest après-ski scenes in the Alps, with options for every mood.
Dance on tables at La Folie Douce’s high-altitude terrace or soak up Cocorico’s slope-side energy with live bands and DJs. For something more relaxed, sip vin chaud by Grizzly’s crackling fire or enjoy family-friendly vibes on Le Brasero’s sunny deck.
Clubs
When the bars close, Tignes’ clubs keep the party going late into the night. Melting Pot in Val Claret is an underground hotspot for house, hip-hop, and EDM fans, while Blue Girl delivers cheesy Euro-pop and wild singalongs. In Le Lac, Jack’s Club pairs bowling with retro dance tunes for a quirky night out, and the huge new Strike Club attracts international DJs and big crowds. Expect vibrant atmospheres, diverse playlists, and non-stop energy until the early hours.
Bars
Tignes’ bar scene offers something for everyone, from lively pubs to sophisticated lounges. The Marmot Arms and Le Moose in Le Lac deliver classic après vibes with live music, DJs, and plenty of British expats. In Val Claret, Le Studio’s cocktails and smooth soundtracks appeal to a mellow crowd, while Le Whitney Bar provides a chic, fireside experience.
Restaurants in Tignes
Tignes serves up impressive dining, from cozy alpine chalets to fine dining gems.
On the slopes, indulge in gourmet cuisine with glacier views at Le Panoramic or rustic Savoyard fare at Lo Soli. In the villages, La Ferme des 3 Capucines offers farm-to-table charm, while Michelin-starred Ursus wows with forest-inspired tasting menus.
For casual bites, La Pignatta’s pizzas and Brasero’s hearty grills hit the spot.
