Les Contamines Ski Resort Guide

Why Ski in Les Contamines?

You could use a Mont Blanc lift pass in this region, which also covers Chamonix and Megeve, and the companies we use usually offer a day trip to one or both of these resorts whilst you are there to get the most out of your pass. It has a fair sized intermediate ski area of 120km and even though you may think its height is low – it has a very good snow record. The two-stage gondola from Le Lay brings you up to the mainly NE facing pistes with lifts taking you up to 2500m. There is a ridge at Col du Joy to some SW facing runs and a single red going down to Belleville at 1200m. From here you can take the new 16-person gondola back up to La Ruelle and a further high-speed chair back up to the Col du Joy. A further Gondola ‘Etape’ is situated further out of Les Contamines beyond the main lifts at Le Lay in a car park and can also take you up to the slopes.

Beginners skiing in Les Contamines

There is a nursery area in the village but better and indeed higher nursery slopes can be found at the mid and top station of the gondola. There are only a few greens to progress onto so take the easier blues.

Intermediates skiing in Les Contamines

The best runs for good intermediates are from the gondolas top station down towards its mid station and in good snow the gladed runs down to La Ruelle are great. Good intermediates shouldn’t have too much trouble with the black runs here.

Advanced skiing in Les Contamines

Make use of the Mont Blanc pass and not only test you skills on the steep western section of Les Contamines and its varied off piste – but try Chamonix too – a Mecca for the advanced skier.

Snowboarding in Les Contamines

Good intermediate terrain, a fun park and half pipe situated on the Tierces slope. Again, head for Chamonix (which is included on your pass for more action!)

Après ski in Les Contamines

There is a relaxed and friendly ambience throughout the village and the nightlife is limited although there are 38 shops and 13 restaurants. The bars are very ‘French’ and a couple have live music on some nights of the week. There is also a disco called the Igloo where you can dance until the early hours if the mood takes you. You HAVE to go to the bar/restaurant Savoisienne! – we have been here – it is a traditional pretty little place tucked away near the river and the food is FANTASTIC! Other activities include snowmobiling, which you can do after dark too and cross-country skiing.
