Obertauern Ski Holidays

Obertauern is a high snow-sure ski resort, its an attractive town with a collection of chalet styled buildings with a mix of modern styled architecture and more traditional. It’s a functional rather than a traditional Austrian village. The transfer time from Salzburg is around 90 minutes.

If you are skiing with friends of differing ski levels, Obertauern should be on your list of suitable ski resorts. It’s a high, snow-sure ski resort with queue free lifts, an excellent snow record and Austrian styled lively après ski. Obertauern is yet to make its mark with British skiers but is fast building a strong following with avid skiers who love it. Obertauern is also very popular with snowboarders who enjoy the snow park and variety of slopes and off-piste runs.

The skiing offers a total of 150km of skiing including the skiing, 100km in Obertauern and 50km in Mauterndorf which is also included with your ski pass. (Connected by a free 20-minute bus journey). The village is located at an altitude of 1740m with the top skiing at 2313m.

The lift system copes well with visitor peaks and queues simply never happen. There is a total of 4 cable cars, 22 chair lifts and 10 drag lifts which connect to 87km of Blue runs, 52km of red runs and 51km of black runs.

Why choose Obertauern

The ski resort of Obertauern is Austria’s only purpose built resort. The high altitude offers great snow so that you can ski back to the village from the top of the mountains. The slopes circle the resort and can be accessed from 3 areas. The main part of the slopes is on the sunny side of the mountains so the views are quite stunning. The village is compact with some shops and bars and the accommodation is spread out along the main road. There are a total of 26 lifts in this ski area and 95km of piste, most are blue and red runs but there are quite a few black runs. The slopes on the less sunny south side tend to be a lot quieter and twice a week they open with floodlights for some night skiing.

The skiing in Obertauern

Beginners skiing

The nursery slopes in Obertauern for beginners are very good, a bit spread around but a great place to start out. Once your confidence has increased you will want to take the Schaidberg chair to the higher altitude beginner’s area and from there the progression to the next stage of blue runs is a nice and easy run down.

Intermediate skiing

Intermediates will love this area of Obertauern. If you are an early intermediate then you’re best off staying on the lower part of the mountain whilst you build up your confidence you can then join the more advanced intermediates on the harder runs further up.

Advanced skiing

For the more advanced skiers there are some nice steep black runs once you’re at the top of the Gamsleiten chair. If you want to go on an off piste run this is a great challenge but a guide is recommended.

Snowboarding

The boarding in Obertauern is generally good for all levels. The wide open terrain of this area is easily accessible so all levels are able to get around and try all the different parts. There is a terrain park near the Kehkopfbahn lift which is great for all the freestyle boarders.

Après ski in Obertauern

The Après Obertauern is reasonably lively. The bars in the village are fun, and the décor is interesting. Some have a disco that will stay open for some late night dancing. The mountain restaurants are very good but can get a bit crowded during peak times.

Activities off the slopes in Obertauern

The non skiers in Obertauern can enjoy the large sports centre in town, this does not have a pool. There are some great walks up to Kringsalm for you to enjoy the stunning views and trips can be organised locally to Salzburg.
