Well within the Arctic Circle lies the famous Finnish ski resort of Levi. Visitors from all over flock here to experience the wonders of the Arctic landscape, while enjoying un-crowded slopes and a friendly village atmosphere.
As one of Finland’s largest ski areas, and being the furthest north, Levi boasts fabulous light powder snow from October to May due to the low temperatures throughout the winter. Snow cannons are here too to ensure the pistes are always perfectly maintained.
With over 40 runs and 27 lifts serving the ski area, the slopes are generally un-crowded and queues are kept to a minimum. Lots of competitions and World Cup events have been held here, and for good reason.
The resort itself has a warm and inviting atmosphere, with streets lined with pretty restaurants and cabins, and hotels nestled amongst the trees. Mountain restaurants are also dotted across the slopes, and a spectacular panoramic restaurant sits at the top of one mountain.
The ski schools here are excellent, with the majority of instructors being English speaking. The beginners’ ski area is very good, but advancing from here can be difficult as there aren’t many green or blue runs for beginners.
Skiing in Levi is predominantly for intermediate skiers, with the majority of the runs being red runs.
There are a handful of difficult black runs in the ski resort of Levi, however it’s home to the country’s most extensive cross country trails, 230km in total, so you can explore the Artic wilderness with its varying terrain.
With the fabulous snow conditions and plenty of long runs, snowboarders will fit in perfectly here. In fact is houses Finland’s biggest snow park so the more daring boarder will have lots to do here.
Après ski in the ski resort of Levi is plentiful and full of charm and tradition. Delicious Lapp cuisine is served in several of the 30 restaurants, one of which, Kammi, serves food which has been cooked on an open fire. Some of the hotels boast huge night clubs; there are karaoke nights and also live bands. For a once in a lifetime experience, head to the mountain top restaurant Tuikku in the hope of seeing the magical Northern Lights.
There’s plenty to do in this Lapland resort apart from skiing or boarding. Typical Arctic activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling and even hot air balloon rides are amongst the many things on offer.
