Why Easter and April Are a Great Time For A Late-Season Ski Holiday

One of the latest end-of-season ski trips I have ever been on was to Riksgränsen in Sweden, the most northerly ski resort in the world, which is roughly 200 kms north of the Arctic Circle. – and I skied right up to the last day of May!

In this ski area at this time of year, it never gets dark, which is very strange, but not as strange as the skiing and snowboarding under the midnight sun

Each day, you make an early start to take advantage of the spring snow, but by around 2pm the springtime temperatures have made the conditions very slushy.

So, after a spot of late lunch, what do you do? You go back to bed and rest or sleep until about 10pm. Then you get up and don your ski gear again to head back out to the slopes.

While you have been resting, the piste bashers have been busy flattening out the snow, which then freezes again as the nighttime temperature drops.

As it doesn’t get dark, the lifts stay open to about 2am in the morning, which means you are effectively getting two ski days in one!

However, it’s not necessary for you to indulge in this odd type of ski trip, which really messes with your metabolism as you are never quite sure what day it is – to enjoy some late-season skiing and snowboarding.

Easter holidays and the month of April is an attractive time to hit the slopes. Resorts provide plenty of attractions for late-season skiers and snowboarders and there are plenty of money-saving offers available.

For some travellers, an Easter ski break is their main annual ski holiday. For others who may already have taken a trip earlier in the winter, spring brings the temptation of one last ski or snowboard escape before the lifts close for the season.

A convenient time for many skiers

Easter often falls at a point in the calendar that makes travel easier for many people. For families in particular, it can be one of the few times when everyone is free to travel together.

Key reasons Easter works well:

  • School holidays often coincide with the Easter period
  • Many high-altitude Alpine resorts remain open well into April

For those with busy winter schedules, Easter may simply be the first opportunity to fit in a ski holiday.

A bonus trip for keen skiers

For ski enthusiasts who have already enjoyed a winter holiday earlier in the season, the arrival of spring can offer the opportunity of squeezing in another ski holiday.

Rather than a full week, this might be:

  • A long-weekend ski break
  • A short mid-week getaway
  • A last trip before summer

Spring skiing has a more relaxed atmosphere, making it ideal for short breaks with friends or spontaneous getaways.

The appeal of spring skiing

One of the biggest draws of April skiing is the weather.

Compared with mid-winter, the mountains often deliver clear skies and milder temperatures, creating a very different experience on the slopes.

Typical features of spring skiing include:

  • Sunny days and bluebird conditions
  • Warmer temperatures
  • Long daylight hours
  • Outdoor lunches on sunny mountain terraces

Many skiers enjoy the rhythm of a spring day on the mountain, skiing early while the snow is firm, relaxing over lunch in the sunshine, followed by a laid-back few hours skiing in the afternoon and early evening until the lifts close.

Quieter slopes and a relaxed atmosphere

Once the peak winter holiday periods have passed, many resorts become noticeably calmer.

That can mean:

  • Shorter lift queues
  • Less crowded pistes
  • A more relaxed atmosphere in resort

For some skiers and snowboarders, this makes late-season trips one of the most enjoyable times of the year to ski.

Late-season deals and special offers

Another major attraction of Easter and April skiing is the potential to save money.

As the season begins to wind down, tour operators and accommodation providers often release late-season offers to fill any remaining capacity.

Common deals may include:

  • Discounted package holidays
  • Reduced hotel or chalet prices
  • Lift-pass promotions
  • Last-minute availability on flights and transfers

These offers can make it possible to visit well-known Alpine resorts at significantly lower prices than peak season.

Flexibility: choose where the snow is best

By springtime, the winter’s snow patterns are well established, which can give travellers an advantage when booking.

Skiers and snowboarders can keep an eye on conditions and decide closer to departure.

Helpful strategies include:

  • Monitoring snow reports and weather forecasts
  • Choosing resorts with high-altitude terrain
  • Opting for destinations with glacier skiing

This flexibility means travellers can often pick the resorts with the strongest snow conditions at the time.

A festive end to the ski season

Spring also brings a celebratory mood to many ski resorts as the season draws to a close.

Visitors will find:

  • End-of-season festivals
  • Live music events on the mountain
  • Lively après-ski parties
  • Special closing-weekend celebrations

For passionate skiers and snowboarders, a late-season trip is often about making the most of the final weeks of winter before the mountains transition to summer activities.

The bottom line

Whether it’s your only ski or snowboard holiday of the year or an extra getaway squeezed in before the lifts close, Easter and April offer a compelling time for skiing and snowboarding.

With sunny weather, quieter slopes and the possibility of late-season bargains, spring skiing has become an increasingly popular way to enjoy the mountains and to give winter one last hurrah.
