For a lot of British skiers, a ski holiday in Canada will have been on their wish list for years.
Part of that is the skiing, of course. The mountains are huge, the snow is super reliable, and the tree skiing is some of the best anywhere. But Canada also makes memories that aren’t skiing at all like a morning watching for elk, an afternoon out on a frozen lake, a walk on a glacier, the train through the Rockies, or a couple of days in Vancouver or Calgary on either end.
For most people, Canada means the Rockies out west, in Whistler, Banff or maybe Lake Louise. But it’s worth knowing that Ski Line offers a second Canada too. Club Med runs all-inclusive skiing in French-speaking Québec in the east, a genuinely unique week that feels a world away from anything in the Rockies.
Why choose Canada

People don’t just go to Canada for better skiing. They go for something different and on a larger scale than the Alps.
What they discover is the space, on the mountain and off it. Lift queues that barely exist. Staff who seem pleased you’re there rather than tolerating you. Rooms you can actually spread out in. Snow you can rely on. And the fact that although the skiing is truly epic, it’s only part of the story.
Whistler or Banff?
For most people, choosing between these two icons is the first real decision.
Consider Whistler if you want the famous name and a village with a pulse. One enormous interconnected ski area, with restaurants, shops and bars right there when you come off the hill.
Banff will suit you better if you value stunning scenery while you ski. Picture classic Rocky Mountain views, more variety, and the chance to ski several different resorts across one holiday rather than the same area all week.
If you’re torn between the two, speak to our Canada specialists on 020 8313 3999. We’ll happily talk through the skiing, atmosphere, accommodation and travel logistics to help you decide which is the better fit.

Canada Beyond Whistler and Banff
Whistler and Banff dominate most Canadian skiing, but they’re not the only options.
Lake Louise is for skiers who care about the scenery and the quality of the skiing over what the village does at night.
Whistler and Vancouver together is the one to look at if you fancy exploring more of Canada either side of the skiing.
Québec is the proper left-field choice. It’s French-speaking, a shorter flight than the Rockies, and home to the Club Med all-inclusive. Think of it less as a different resort and more as a different Canada altogether.
How Is Skiing in Canada Different?
Plenty of seasoned Alpine skiers are caught off guard by how different it feels in Canada.
Tree skiing is the big one. In a lot of Canadian resorts, picking your way down through the gladed forest is as much the point as the groomed runs. It isn’t a novelty on the side. It’s part of how you ski the mountain.
In-bounds off-piste surprises people too. A lot of the ungroomed terrain, tree runs and powder bowls sit inside the resort boundary and get managed as part of the ski area, so you’re often dropping straight into it off the lift. In the Alps, going off-piste tends to feel more like an expedition.
And it’s quiet. People remark constantly on how much room there is, and how short the queues are next to a busy week in Europe.
Accommodation in Canada
If you’re used to a catered chalet in France, Canada takes some adjusting to.
Most of what you’ll stay in is room-only or B&B hotels, self-catered apartments and condos. You won’t find the chalet-host-cooks-your-dinner model that’s so common in the Alps. That doesn’t make it a worse choice, just a different one, and for families and groups especially, the extra room and flexibility often turns out to be a plus.
Ski-in/ski-out is a bigger deal in Canada than people expect. A fair few of our Canada bookings start with finding the right place to stay and then sorting the skiing around it, rather than the other way round.

Après Ski and Atmosphere
Canada is a more relaxed affair than the Alps. If your idea of après involves table dancing and a club going until two, we’d point you at Austria and save you the airfare. What Canada does instead is North American culture and hospitality, cosy bars, a good craft beer, proper restaurants, a fire pit and an easy evening in the village.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Canada worth the extra cost?
Canada isn’t a cheap week’s skiing. It’s a full on holiday to a sensational destination with North American culture, and for that Canada is worth the extra cost.
Is the long flight worth the effort?
There’s no point pretending that Canada isn’t further than the Alps, but it’s usually less of an issue than people imagine. The Rockies are roughly a 9 hour flight to Calgary, a touch more to Vancouver; Québec is closer, around 7 ½ hours to Montréal. It’s a daytime flight out and one travel day at each end, so the week itself never feels rushed.
What about the jet lag?
Don’t fret about this. Most people find it easier than they expected. During the ski season the Rockies run about seven hours behind the UK (eight over in Vancouver), and Québec five. Heading out you’re going west, which is the kinder direction. You just stay up a little later and you’re more or less on local time by the second day. It also helps you to wake up early to help beat the crowds! Keep your first day back in the UK free if possible to recover.
Is it too cold?
Not usually. It can read colder than the Alps on paper, especially around Banff and Lake Louise, but it’s a much drier cold which changes how it feels. A sunny day at minus ten out there is often more comfortable than a damp day near freezing in Europe, where the wet seems to get into everything. That same dry cold is why the snow keeps so well right through the season.
Our View on Canada
It’s further, and most weeks it’ll cost you more than the Alps. But the skiers who love Canada aren’t the ones counting the pennies on a week’s skiing, they’re the ones who want the week to be about more than just skiing.
People come home and the story is the skiing and then some. It’s the moose by the road, or how empty the mountain felt, or the bartender who remembered their order by the Thursday. The skiing’s excellent, but it ends up framing the rest of the trip rather than being the whole point of it.
Ask people who’ve made the trip and very few wish they’d simply booked another week in the Alps.
