Starry nights in Sauze d’Oulx

Starry nights in Sauze d’Oulx on a short ski trip

I love the skiing in the Milky Way, it’s among the heavy weights of the big ski areas bosting 400km of piste. Being just an hour from Turin airport, it’s a perfect destination for a short skiing break. Many of the hotels are willing to accept short stays on all the busiest of weekends.

My favourite village is Sauze d’Oulx. The locals are friendly, the hotels are welcoming and the night life is as good as any and I think the skiing is the best the Milky Way has to offer. Nice long runs which are often graded to flatter. Lots of tree lined skiing and varied runs. The runs in Sansicario are brilliant and empty on all but the peak weeks and from here you can connect to the French side of the Milky Way ski area to the villages of Montgenevre and Claviere although I’m convinced the skiing and lift time make this a worthwhile trip when only skiing for a few days.

I was skiing in the first week in March with my sailing and ski buddy Stuart, a quick couple of days away, we planned to be the first on the lift in the morning and the last off the mountain at night to make the most of our precious ski time. By choosing to stay in the Chalet Capaninna we managed be up the mountain before the lifts even opened and well……. we never came down at night!

Chalet Capannia is located 6km by skidoo at 2175m, high above Sauze d’Oulx its self n an area known as Sportina, a popular lunch time destination, it’s would be hard to miss the Chalet, its painted bright yellow!

The Chalet is managed and owned by the smiling and hardworking Ivo and his wife Rosalba. It’s been in Ivo’s family since the 1950’s. Todayit has a real fire pizza oven that never cools, and the kitchen’s knock out perfect simple home cooked food to an army of skiers each lunch time. Most of whom don’t realise there are rooms to let by the night here too.

Staying at the Chalet Capaninna wouldn’t appeal to everyone, the rooms are simple, in fact my bed was a camp bed style, but I have to say I had a good night sleep on it, the ensuite shower although small, had plenty of hot water.  The room was warm, almost too warm.  It’s the location of the chalet that’s the key draw to staying here and if you were lucky enough to stay here after a good fresh snow fall you be in for a real treat.  Sadly we weren’t that lucky.

If you are staying here you will need a little additional planning! An easy to carry bag is essential as you and your luggage reach the Sportina area via the Clotes chair, and you will need to be on your skis! If you are renting make sure your taxi takes you to the ski rental shop first.  Going home it’s the reverse although our flight home required us to leave the chalet before the lifts opened so Ivo took us down the slopes via Skidoo and journey of about 6km. Ivo charges an additional €20 per person for this service. He is also happy to drive you down (and back) if you fancy going to town for the evening for the night life, although he points out the latest he wants to do the pickup is midnight.
