Courmayeur is a chic yet traditional Italian resort at the foot of Mont Blanc, long favoured by skiers seeking more than just mileage. Expect sweeping views of the Mont Blanc massif, tree-lined descents and reliable snow, with over 80% of pistes supported by snowmaking. Childcare in Courmayeur
Courmayeur is well equipped for families needing childcare during a ski holiday. At Plan Chécrouit, the Maison des Enfants provides a ski kindergarten where qualified staff combine early ski lessons with indoor and outdoor play. In Dolonne, the Fun Park offers a safe snow area with sledging, tubing and supervised activities for younger children. Several ski schools run dedicated kids’ programmes, from beginner classes to junior race training, making Courmayeur ski holidays a practical choice for families.
The Skiing in Courmayeur
Courmayeur offers 31 runs between 1,210 and 2,755 metres, and is best suited to confident intermediates. The main skiing area is at Plan Chécrouit and, with over 80% of the terrain covered by snow cannons, snow is virtually guaranteed. In the afternoon, most people head to the north-west facing slopes of Val Veny. These tree-lined runs are varied and offer superb views of Mont Blanc. The connections between the two sectors are intricate, with many routes available.
Beginner Skiing in Courmayeur
Although Courmayeur is not best suited to beginners, there are several gentle nursery slopes situated at Plan Checrouit and Maison Vieille. There is also a beginner area in the village of Dolonne with magic carpets for kids.
Tuition is very good and the wide beginners slopes are ideal learning grounds in beautiful surroundings. However, there are few easy runs to progress to and the area can get crowded. In fact, even some of the gentler progression trails can feel steep for novices, and there are few long, confidence-building green runs.
Intermediate Skiing in Courmayeur
Courmayeur is the perfect resort for intermediate to good skiers, with an abundance of testing runs, including a huge choice of treeless bowls, challenging mogul fields, steep gullies and wide open pistes.
Most pistes are cruising blues and reds, with wide, undulating runs on the Plan Chécrouit side ideal for practising turns against the Mont Blanc backdrop. More confident skiers can head to Val Veny for longer, tree-lined reds like the scenic Pra Neyron. Grading is known to be strict, so many blues would be classed as reds elsewhere, allowing skiers to progress with confidence. Tree-lined slopes also give good visibility in poor weather.
Advanced Skiing in Courmayeur
Generally there are few challenging pistes in Courmayeur. Although, the challenging descent from the Cresta Youla to Val Veny entails a long run of 9kms and the Competizone unpisted, fresh snow or moguls is a must. There are off-piste opportunities and lots of cross-country to enjoy. In addition heli-drops are available on surrounding peaks, and many experts extend their options with the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass, combining Courmayeur’s freeride terrain with Chamonix’s extreme slopes.
Snowboarding In Courmayeur
If you are into freeriding, Courmayeur is worth checking out. Steeps around Cresta d’Arp and long glacier descents from Punta Helbronner offer serious lines, while the lower slopes have gladed runs and trees to play in. Freestylers can use the Snowpark in the Aretù area at 2,000 m, with three progressive lines of jumps, rails, and boxes, though it’s modest compared to larger resorts. Natural terrain across the mountain also provides endless jibbing and side hits. Snowboarders are welcome on all lifts, most of which are gondolas or chairs, though flats in Val Veny may require a little skating.
Après Ski In Courmayeur
Après-ski in Courmayeur centres on Via Roma, where bars such as Bar Roma and Caffè della Posta serve drinks with complimentary antipasti. On-mountain venues like Super G keep the party going after lifts close. Weekends are busiest, with three nightclubs including CourmaClub. The scene is stylish and sociable, more cocktails and canapés than late-night revelry.
