The Skiing In Mottaret

Beginners Skiing

Beginners will enjoy the excellent nursery slopes in Mottaret, and the progression slopes above the village offer a “Zen Area” a marked off area especially for nervous beginners, once the basics have been mastered there is a long and flat green run down to Meribel and should be managed by all within a few days of lessons.

Intermediates Skiing

Simply the best! The shear choice of terrain and vastness of the area make Mottaret and the whole of the three valleys ski area ideal for all levels.

Advanced Skiing

The size and variety of slopes makes the Meribel valley ideal for expert skiers and snow boarders, the off piste skiing is good too. No matter what you are looking for you will find it here, be it off piste through Couloirs and trees, steep powder bowls in the back country or wonderfully groomed pistes you will find it here in the 3 valleys.

Snowboarding

Meribel and Mottaret have long be the favoured choice for snow boarders of all levels. Head for Mont Vallon for good steep off piste routes, some of our boarding clients have warned others from taking the Ours Blue back down to Mottaret from Mont Vallon which is very hard work in some flat sections. Most of lifts are chairs or Gondolas, and the few drags are easy to avoid.

Ski Lessons

Mottaret is well served by ski schools for all ages and levels. The largest is ESF (École du Ski Français), offering children’s groups from age 3, teen and adult lessons, private tuition, and guided off-piste. Lessons are taught in English and French, and children often finish with a medal test such as “Ourson” or “Flocon.” Smaller British-run schools like New Generation and Magic in Motion also operate here, with English-speaking instructors and smaller class sizes. Booking early for peak weeks is strongly advised, particularly for English-speaking children’s groups.

Ski Passes

Lift passes are integrated into the wider Méribel and Three Valleys system. Skiers can choose between a Méribel Valley pass or the full Three Valleys pass, which offers unlimited access to all linked resorts. Families of two adults and two or more children benefit from discounts, while under-5s and over-75s ski free with proof of age. For beginners, a “Mini Pass” covers nursery areas such as the Altiport at a reduced rate, with the option to upgrade later once skiers are ready for larger slopes.

Après Ski

The night life in Mottaret kicks off as the lifts start to close with the bars around the bottom of the slopes getting very lively. We particularly recommend the Zig-Zag and Downtown. Later on there are a few discos which stay open late. Taxis do run between Meribel and Mottaret late at night but although it’s only a short distance between the two the charges are higher than you would expect, about €20 each way! It ‘s worth the cost as in Meribel the night life rocks until the wee small hours.

Activities Off The Slopes

The best activities for non skiers are located in Meribel centre reached by bus and taking about 5 to 7 minutes if you don’t fancy walking. Here you will have full use of the Olympic centre with pool and bowling lanes. In Mottaret itself off slope activities are limited however there is a cinema showing English sub titled films.
