Madonna di Campiglio Set to Limit Ski Pass Sales on Peak Dates

The ski resort Madonna di Campiglio in Italy is set to limit ski pass sales on peak dates. A “Quality Before Quantity” move in the Italian Alps.

If you’re dreaming of an Italian ski holiday this winter, take note: Madonna di Campiglio, one of Italy’s most famous ski resorts, is about to make history. The resort, nestled in the stunning Dolomites, will become the first in Italy to limit the number of skiers on the slopes during the busiest weeks of the ski season.

Starting this winter, a maximum of 15,000 skiers will be allowed on the pistes on selected peak dates, a decision that reflects the resort’s new “quality before quantity” approach. According to officials, the aim is to preserve both safety and skiers’ enjoyment, ensuring that Madonna di Campiglio remains one of the best ski destinations in Italy for premium alpine experiences.

When Will the Ski Pass Limits Apply?

The restrictions will be in place on up to 17 high-demand days throughout the season. These include major holiday weeks such as New Year (28 December to 5 January) and February Half Term (Carnevale week, 15–22 February 2026), traditionally the most crowded periods for Italian ski resorts.

Daily ski pass sales will be capped across the Dolomiti di Brenta area, which includes Madonna di Campiglio, Pinzolo, and Folgarida Marilleva. However, seasonal, multi-day, and local ski passes for these connected resorts will not be affected.

Mal Sargeant, one of Ski Line’s senior sales advisors, said, “This can only be good news for skiers who pay a premium to ski over the peak weeks. We will be encouraging our clients to add the Dolomites to their wish list for their 2025/26 ski holiday plans. It’s refreshing to see a ski resort putting their clients’ ski experience before profits”.

Why the Change?

In previous seasons, the resort saw as many as 23,000 skiers on the slopes in a single day, a number that resort management says made it difficult to maintain service quality and safety.

Bruno Felicetti, General Manager of Funivie di Madonna di Campiglio, explained to Corriere del Trentino:

“We have critical days that need to be managed in advance, without bottlenecks. When there are too many people, the quality of service and sense of safety both drop. Accidents increase, and guests tell us they’re afraid of getting hurt. We need to give ourselves a sense of limits.”

This new policy echoes similar crowd-control efforts seen in other popular Italian tourist destinations such as Venice and Cinque Terre, a sign that Italy’s most visited spots are prioritising sustainability and visitor satisfaction.

What This Means for Skiers

For those planning a ski holiday in Madonna di Campiglio, it’s worth booking ski passes and accommodation early for peak periods. The new system aims to keep the slopes quieter, lift queues shorter, and conditions safer. All positives for anyone seeking a premium Italian ski experience.

If you’re flexible, visiting outside the busiest weeks could mean even more space on the slopes and better value for money.

The Future of Skiing in Italy?

This move could set a precedent for other ski resorts across the Italian Alps, encouraging a balance between tourism and sustainability. By focusing on skier satisfaction over volume, Madonna di Campiglio is redefining what it means to deliver a world-class ski experience in Italy.
