6 of the most picturesque ski resorts

For some the convenience of a purpose-built ski resort like Tignes, Avoriaz or Flaine is heaven whilst for others, it’s their idea of hell! For some of us, a picturesque setting trumps everything, especially the convenience of a high-rise ski resort.

The Alps can do picturesque like no other mountain range. You have some of the most majestic mountain views such as Mont Blanc, The Matterhorn, or the Dolomites, choose your ski resort right and you can enjoy both great skiing and deliver Instagram posts to really make your friends jealous.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Thanks in part to the iconic Matterhorn Mountain, Zermatt is probably the most picturesque ski destination on the planet with a car-free village centre which is dotted with cute wooden chalets (Mazots) and farm huts. The little streams running through the town add to Zermatt’s appeal and it is absolutely stunning at night under the twinkle of the stars. It is one of the most romantic ski resorts for many reasons. The skiing, which is linked to the Italian ski resort of Cervinia has a combined area 360km of pisted slopes to match all abilities.

Wengen, Switzerland

The Jungfrau region is made up of three famous snowy peaks namely the Eiger, Mönch and the Jungfrau. Wengen is reached by a single rail track, there are no vehicles allowed in or through its centre.

The skiing won’t disappoint! in addition to the 213km of pistes in Wengen, the more testing runs on the Kleine Scheidegg Mountain will delight better skiers who like to be challenged.

Megeve, France

Megeve is France’s equivalent perhaps to the Swiss ski resort of St Moritz without the horse racing! This stunning alpine town has a landscape that’s not easily matched. As part of the Evasion Mont Blanc ski area, you have access to 325km of pistes serviced by 89 lifts.

Alpbach, Austria

Alpbach is one of the jewels of the Tyrolean Alps and is regarded as one of Austria’s most attractive winter wonderlands. The skiing isn’t extensive and is best suited to skiers who prefer to watch out for good scenery rather than icy couloirs.

Cortina, Italy

Cortina d’Ampezzo is known as the Queen of the Dolomites and is often associated with other upmarket ski destinations like St Moritz, Klosters and Courchevel. The snow-capped Dolomite peaks are best seen from Cortina whose stunning peaks and steep wooded valleys are a glorious sight as the day’s last sun hits the pink stone of the Dolomites.

Saas Fee, Switzerland

Saas Fee ticks more than just the picturesque box, it is high and snowsure with glacial skiing. Known as the Pearl of the Alps, Saas Fee is a beautiful car-free alpine village which offers great skiing opportunities from a magical ski holiday base.
