Cortina d’Ampezzo is Italy’s most fashionable resort, set in the magnificent Dolomites. The ring road keeps traffic away from its cobbled centre where you will find high-end jewellery and boutique shops selling the big luxury brands and designer shops. Cortina attracts more than a few upmarket guests from the major cities in Italy, as well as its fair share of international visitors. Some of these guests arrive in Ferraris wearing fur coats and carrying small dogs. Promenading in the popular Corso Italia at 5pm is far more important than skiing for the “Rich Set”, 70% of whom never set foot on the slopes. This is good news for the rest of us more serious skiers!

The skiing is good for all levels if you consider the ample off-piste skiing available. The Sella Ronda is within reach by bus, there is more good skiing to be had. The local area offers up a ski range from 1225m to 2930m covering 115km of pistes.

Beginners will especially enjoy Cortina, it has one of the best and largest nursery slopes and the progression slopes are superb.

Non-ski activities are as you would expect when 70% of the visitors don’t ski, the choices are extensive. There are 70km of trails for cross-country skiers, spas, shopping, ice skating, hockey matches and swimming to name a few.

Why choose Cortina

Cortina, known as the Pearl of the Dolomites, is one of the top resorts in the Dolomiti Superski area. It is in a wide, bowl shaped valley surrounded by spectacular mountains whose slopes are guaranteed to be perfectly groomed, 90% of them with snow making facilities. The local skiing is extensive and varied and other resorts such as S.Cassiano and Corvara in the Dolomiti Superski area are easily reached from the Falzarego pass. The resort also offers numerous activities including many for the non-skier.

Above and below the tree line are a variety of exciting slopes.

Beginners skiing

The ski school meets at Socrepes where beginners start off on wide and gentle slopes. Additional nursery slopes are located in no less than three other areas. After the first day beginners who have mastered the baby drag lift can enjoy an extensive area of blue runs.

Intermediate skiing

Start off on the Tofana area where at Ra Valles there is a wide open bowl, usually with good powder conditions. On the opposite side of Cortina, the Faloria and Cristallo areas have some excellent slopes for most grades of skier.

Advanced skiing

Strictly for the fearless are two very steep and narrow runs – the Forcella Rossa from Ra Valles and the Staunies from Cristallo. There are many long runs both above and below the tree line on both sides of the valley.

Snowboarding

The terrain here is vast and will suit all. Freeriders should check out the runs down from the Tofana for the best powder. Freestylers should exploit the Tofana area, which has loads of natural hits and kickers to play on. Progression should be easy for beginners on mellow, wide slopes.
