And Now For Something Completely Different - Japan

When you start leafing through ski and snowboard brochures or searching online for ideas for your next winter trip to the mountains, Japan does not often spring to mind… but it should.

Japan has become one of the most coveted ski and snowboard holiday destinations in the world, and nowhere is that more evident than on the northern island of Hokkaido.

Resorts such as Kiroro, Sahoro and Tomamu offer a blend of uncrowded slopes, world-class powder and a distinctive cultural backdrop that sets a Japanese ski holiday apart from the Alps.

Getting There

For British travellers, the journey begins with a long-haul flight to Tokyo, usually landing at Tokyo Haneda Airport or Narita International Airport, followed by a domestic connection to New Chitose Airport near Sapporo.

From there, transfers to the resorts are straightforward, with Kiroro around an hour away, and Tomamu and Sahoro a little further inland.

Japow: The Snow Factor

What makes these resorts special is Japan’s legendary snow. Thanks to cold Siberian winds sweeping across the Sea of Japan, Hokkaido is renowned for its extraordinarily light, dry powder, often referred to as ‘Japow’.

Resorts like Kiroro receive vast annual snowfall totals, with frequent overnight dumps that keep conditions fresh and pristine.

Kiroro, Sahoro & Tomamu

Kiroro, located near the port town of Otaru in western Hokkaido, is a dream for skiers and snowboarders seeking pistes and powder without crowds. The resort has around 22 runs spread across two main mountains, catering to all abilities.

Its reputation is built on consistent snowfall and quiet slopes, making it ideal for intermediate cruisers and powder hunters alike. The terrain mixes groomed pistes with tree-lined runs and off-piste zones. A modern lift infrastructure keeps queues to a minimum.

Further inland lies Sahoro, a smaller and more intimate resort in central Hokkaido. With 20+ runs, it offers a balanced mix of beginner, intermediate and some advanced terrain.

Sahoro typically gets around eight metres of snow each season, and like much of Hokkaido, the quality is exceptionally light and dry. Its relaxed atmosphere and manageable size make it particularly appealing for families or those new to skiing in Japan, while still providing enough variety for a few days of exploration.

Tomamu, the largest of the trio, is set in central Hokkaido, and has around 30 runs across a wide skiable area, with terrain suited to beginners through to advanced skiers and snowboarders. Its powder, like the other resorts, is famously dry and skiable.

Tomamu also stands out for its facilities, including family-friendly attractions, terrain parks and off-slope activities such as its atmospheric Ice Village.

Beyond the Slopes

While skiing and snowboarding are the main draw, a trip to Japan offers far more than time on the slopes. Many visitors choose to bookend their ski holiday with a stay in Tokyo, where neon-lit districts, historic temples and world-renowned cuisine provide a striking contrast to the snowy tranquillity of Hokkaido. Exploring areas such as Shibuya Crossing or visiting traditional sites like Senso-ji adds a cultural richness.

This combination of exceptional snow, varied terrain and cultural immersion is what makes Japan a bit different for skiers and snowboarders. Whether carving through Kiroro’s powder fields, enjoying Sahoro’s relaxed slopes or exploring the expansive terrain of Tomamu, visitors will find something refreshingly different.

Plus, you get the chance to experience a historic culture, which makes a Japanese ski holiday far more than just a week in the mountains. It’s a journey into an unforgettable winter experience.
