Why Ski in Obergurgl?

Early booking is strongly advised if you intend to visit Obergurgl as its many loyal visitors often book up to a year in advance to get the best hotel. This is little wonder as it’s one of the Alps most snow sure resorts.

The appeal is surely the height as Obergurgl is one of Austria’s highest at 1930 m with a ski range of between 1795 m and 3080 m offering 110 km of pistes. Despite its height the resort is still well covered with snow cannons with 32% of the runs blue, 50% red and 18% Black with a total of 24 lifts.

Obergurgl is largely car free, as it is not effected by through traffic and has few day visitors giving it its relaxed feel.  As a small resort the two ends each have lifts meaning its not far to reach either from the many hotels which are mainly at a 4* level. We also offer a selection of 3* hotels and just a new for the 2010/11 season are a few catered chalets which booked up very quickly so early booking is essential on even low season dates.  The sister resort of Hochgurl is just above and connected by gondola but with just a handful of hotels and its own small ski slopes, most prefer to be in the main village of Obergurgl.

Beginners skiing in Obergurgl

The nursery slopes by the ski school have a free lift but once you progress beyond this you will need a pass. There are some good progression runs to move on to and because of the height of the resort the beginner’s slopes are mostly covered with good snow. Reports from our guests about the local ski school have been very good, class sizes normally no more than 8 and good English is spoken, if you intend to book a private instructor we suggest you do it early.

Intermediates skiing in Obergurgl

The terrain in Obergurgl is perfect for intermediate skiers and the quality of snow is flattering but if you are a big mile skier you may find the extent of the runs limiting. You can always upgrade your pass to include the nearby resort of Solden with has hourly bus services between the two resorts. With 80 km of blue and red runs this is often enough for most of our clients (and some of the blacks could easily be reds in other resorts).

Advanced skiing in Obergurgl

Advanced skiers may find the extent of pisted skiing limited with just 20km of black runs, but when conditions are right the off piste skiing can be excellent, with some good powder often found around the Kirchenkar drag lift. As always we strongly advice our clients to only ever ski off piste with a guide.

Aprè Obergurgl

Après ski starts just after lunch in Obergurgl and continues until its dark. Later on, a few bars get very lively with DJ’s playing until 2am. Krumpns Stadl barn being the most popular. Dining options are mainly in the many hotels some of which are excellent.

Activities off the slopes in Obergurgl

Very little happening off the slopes here, most visitors seem to make use of the facilities on offer in the hotels many of which have spas and pools.
