Val d’Isere Ski Holidays

Why choose Val d’Isère

Val d’Isère appeals to a surprisingly wide range of skiers. Beginners get excellent ski schools and genuinely useful learning areas near the village, while confident intermediates and advanced skiers have one of the most respected ski areas in Europe on their doorstep. But the people who get the most out of it are those who want more than just the skiing. They want good restaurants, lively bars, beautiful surroundings and plenty happening once the lifts close.

Many people weigh up Val d’Isère versus Tignes, which shares most of the same slopes. The skiing is largely the same, but the overall experience isn’t. Tignes wins on value, ski-in/ski-out convenience and purpose-built practicality, while Val d’Isère wins on looks, restaurants, nightlife and traditional Alpine character. Val is the pricier but also the prettier of the two.

So if you’re after a quieter family resort or the cheapest route into the Espace Killy, we’d point you to Val d’Isère’s more sensible neighbour, Tignes. If you want top-tier skiing with a flair few resorts can match, Val d’Isère is hard to beat.

Skiing in Val d’Isère

The skiing in Val d’Isère is substantial. Together with neighbouring Tignes, it forms one of the largest and most respected ski areas in France. Since 2016 it’s been known officially as the Val d’Isère-Tignes ski area, though most still use the far more evocative old name, Espace Killy, after Jean-Claude Killy, the triple Olympic champion who grew up in the resort.

The quality is one of the few things almost nobody argues about. The area is huge, the terrain genuinely varied, and the snow record is one of the best in the Alps, which is a large part of why the resort inspires such loyalty. There’s pedigree to match, too: the Face de Bellevarde staged the 1992 Olympic downhill and still hosts a World Cup race most seasons. The Bellevarde and Tovière sectors are the ones returning visitors tend to name first, while Le Fornet draws those after quieter pistes and well-preserved snow.

You’ll find the lift infrastructure excellent, but queues can build at the key lifts out of the village during the busiest periods. The upside is that once you’re up on the mountain, the sheer scale means it rarely feels crowded.

Ski passes and lessons in Val d’Isère

Most visitors go for the full Val d’Isère-Tignes lift pass, and for the majority of skiers that’s exactly what we’d recommend. The interconnected area is one of the resort’s biggest strengths, and limiting yourself to part of it means missing one of the main reasons to come.

Val d’Isère has an excellent reputation for its ski schools and private tuition, which makes it a strong choice for beginners, families and anyone looking to sharpen their technique. A lot of first-timers are surprised how beginner-friendly it is.

As with every resort, we’ll match your accommodation to where your lessons are likely to start and finish, and can pre-book lessons on your behalf.

Ski accommodation in Val d’Isère

The resort is split into a few distinct areas, and where you stay will make a difference to your week.

The village centre is the most popular choice. You’re within walking distance of the bars, restaurants, shops and après. It’s also the most expensive part of the resort, but if making the most of the nightlife is your priority, look here.

La Daille offers a bit more value, with excellent lift access and regular shuttles into the centre, and for skiers less concerned about nightlife.

Le Fornet sits at the other end of the scale, quieter and more traditional, a little removed from the main village.

Ski Line offers one of our largest ranges in Val d’Isère, with over 100 carefully selected properties, from comfortable apartments and family hotels through to luxury catered chalets and Club Med Val d’Isère.

Val d’Isère is one of the Alps’ great chalet destinations, and catered chalets are the biggest part of our programme. If you want the traditional hosted chalet experience, with cooked breakfasts and afternoon tea, few resorts offer more choice.

Most of our properties sit in the four-star bracket, with the range running from practical three-star up to luxury five-star, and features like ski-in/ski-out access, pools, hot tubs, spas and childcare are widely available, though not every property combines them all.

Speak to a Ski Line expert and we’ll be pleased to help you choose the right property, in the best location for your needs.

Après ski in Val d’Isère

Val d’Isère holds a reputation as one of the great après destinations in the Alps. It’s lively without being swallowed by nightlife, and there’s always something to do whether you want a full-on party or a quiet drink after skiing.

Cocorico has become one of the standout après spots in the resort, all live music, ski-boot dancing and packed terrace, and it’s a regular recommendation from returning guests. For something calmer, Blue Note is worth trying. La Folie Douce is still one of the most famous names on the mountain and worth doing at least once, though opinions divide on whether the prices and crowds are part of the fun or not. Later on, Le Petit Danois and Dick’s Tea Bar keep their loyal followings and cap off Val d’Isère’s party reputation.

Restaurants

The restaurant scene is one of the strongest you’ll find in any ski resort, and one of the clearest places you’ll appreciate choosing Val d’Isère over other resorts. The quality is high and so are the prices, so it pays to do a little research before you arrive. The best places are genuinely excellent, but as with any tourist destination there are places that fall short too.

Names like La Cucùcina and Avancher earn consistently strong reviews, and the mountain restaurants run all the way from simple self-service stops to high-end long lunches.
