Exciting developments are continuing across Europe’s ski resorts, with major infrastructure upgrades and family-focused improvements rolling out in time for the coming winter. From state-of-the-art cable cars in the Swiss Alps to new beginner facilities in Austria, here’s a look at what’s new for skiers and snowboarders heading to the mountains for the 2025/26 season.
New Mürren Cablecar
A second Funifor cablecar between the Swiss mountain villages of Mürren and Birg has gone into operation in time for the 2025/26 ski holiday season. Construction began immediately after the old cable car was dismantled last April.
Almost a year after the opening of the first Funifor cable car between Mürren and Birg, the new cablecar is the second-to-last installation to be inaugurated as part of the major SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX project.
An important feature of the new cable cars is that they are mechanically independent of each other, which means that, if necessary, in the event of maintenance, only one of them needs to be shut down, enabling operation 365 days a year.
What does Funifor actually mean? “A Funifor is an aerial cableway with two parallel suspension cables, the distance between which is approximately equal to or greater than the width of the cable car cabins below”, explains cable car expert Daniel Gertsch, head of cable cars at Schilthorn Cableway Ltd.
The cable cars cover a distance of 2,765m between Mürren and Birg and travel at speeds of around 43km per hour.
The same process will begin again at the start of the year when the last cable car of the project is built between Birg and Schilthorn. Its opening is planned for the beginning of April 2026.

Schilthorn Cableway Ltd is based in Stechelberg and connects the Lauterbrunnen valley from Stechelberg with the car-free mountain villages of Gimmelwald and Mürren, continuing via Birg station to the Schilthorn summit at 2,970m.
In front of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the Schilthorn region offers numerous activities for visitors. The Schilthorn acquired international prominence through the filming of the James Bond movie ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’ in 1968.
SkiWelt Söll Improvements
Skiers and snowboarders using the SkiWelt Söll valley station this season will notice there have been a few changes and improvements to the facilities in this Austrian area, particularly for youngsters and their families.
One of the highlights is a new tubing run, where children can use inflated tubes for a thrilling slide.
A new conveyor belt lift transports ‘newbies’ to the top of a beginner slope where they can make their first turns in the snow.
All this is done to a magical soundtrack of mysterious sounds and fairy-tale tones, which create an enchanting atmosphere to discover the world of the Söll witches. While the children play and slide, parents can relax on the new sun terrace.
