Our Friends at Finches Emporium: A Heartfelt Message After the Fire

The fire completely destroyed the building

Everyone at Ski Line was deeply saddened to hear about the devastating fire that broke out at Finches Emporium in Forest Hill, Southeast London last Thursday (16th October).

Frank and Angela, who many of our regular guests will know as long-time friends, clients and business partners of Ski Line, have poured their hearts into Finches for decades. Their family-run ski and snowboard shop has been a cornerstone of the UK snowsports community since 1947, a place where generations of skiers and boarders have come to get expertly fitted boots, top-quality gear, and genuine, friendly advice.

On Thursday evening, a major fire swept through their Perry Vale premises. Around 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines from the London Fire Brigade battled the blaze for several hours before it was brought under control late that night. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries, and everyone, including a dog, was rescued from a first-floor flat and made it to safety.

While the cause is being investigated, early reports suggest it was an accident that started in a workshop area. The damage to the shop is extensive, but thankfully, the most important thing, everyone’s safety was preserved.

Before the fire, Finches in happier times

The Snowsports Industries of Great Britain (SIGB) shared a message of support on social media, saying:

“We’re sending our heartfelt support to Finches Emporium and everyone in the team after last night’s devastating fire. It’s hard to see such a valued member of our community go through this. We know how much passion and hard work goes into running a store like yours, and the whole of SIGB is behind you as you begin to rebuild.”

Those words couldn’t be truer. Anyone who’s ever visited Finches knows how much love and care go into every part of that shop. It’s not just a store, it’s a community hub for skiers, snowboarders, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts across London.

Frank and Angela and their family have always taken pride in doing things the right way, hand-picking the best gear, taking the time to get every boot fit just right, and treating every customer like part of the family. Their motto says it all: “We don’t just sell kit, we help build adventures.”

As they face the enormous task of rebuilding, the entire Ski Line team, and no doubt, the wider UK snowsports community, want to send our full support.

Frank is probably the most experienced ski boot fitter
