The ski resort of Ellmau is a friendly and pretty resort which is situated at the North east section of SkiWelt, which is the largest mountain circuit in Austria. This area is linked to many different slopes by 94 lifts and you will find 250km of skiable pistes there. The village is quite compact but the accommodation is spread across the area and the local buses through the resort are well organised. The village has a cosy atmosphere and a good selection of shops and friendly cafés and bars. A funicular railway to the edge of the village will take you to Hartaiser, from here you can take the long red run that leads you to the Scheffau’s lifts. Ellmau has a very pleasant area of slopes on Astberg which is set away from the main area which families and the not so adventurous skiers will find perfect for them.
A lot of the Après ski takes place in the main hotels however there are bars and restaurants in the area too. There are lots of events that take place during a weeks stay, with live entertainment or ski displays with a party atmosphere.
There is a leisure centre in Ellmau which will allow any non skiers to swim or take a sauna. Also try the toboggan run from the Astberg lifts. The funicular railway is another fun way to enjoy the mountains without having to ski.
Ellmau has a good variety of nursery slopes all covered by the snowmaking facilities. The main one is at Going. If you take the Astberg chair you will also find some higher altitude nursery slopes as well.
The SkiWelt is an intermediates heaven. With lots of blue and easy red runs you can cover a vast area at an easy pace. The slopes on Astberg also have nice runs.
There are not so many areas for the more advanced skiers in Ellmau, unless you go off piste where you will find more challenging skiing.
If you are just starting out as a snowboarder then this is a good area on which to learn. With lots of easy gentle slopes this area is perfect. There is a snow park in Ellmau which has kickers and rails and you’ll find this near the Kaiserexpress lift. Ellmau does have a lot of t bars and no real terrain for the more advanced boarders.
