Why choose Hundfjället

Young children get one of Sweden’s most memorable ski areas, beginners get plenty of forgiving terrain, while better skiers get Väggen, reds, blacks and genuinely good tree skiing, and teenagers can drift over towards Tandådalen and its more sporting side.

Skiing in Hundfjället

Hundfjället’s skiing is more interesting than the piste map looks. Väggen gives the mountain some bite, but the real talking point among Swedish skiers is the woods and ungroomed terrain around Hundfjället, which is genuinely unusual in Sälen, where off-piste is rare. For exploratory tree skiing, when the snowfall is good, we’d really rate Hundfjället and Tandådalen.

However, the runs are fairly short, so if what you want is to carve long, perfect pistes all day, that’s Stöten’s department, not Hundfjället’s.

Trollskogen deserves a spacial mention. Themed children’s runs can be a bit cheesy, but this is a true Swedish classic.

Ski accommodation in Hundfjället

Both our Hundfjället accommodation options are ski-in/ski-out, and offer two different experiences.

SkiStar Lodge Hundfjället excels for skiing. It’s smart and modern and sits right at the foot of the slopes, with the West Express chairlift outside the door and Trollskogen, the children’s skiing and ski school close by. You can take a hotel room with breakfast or a larger self-catering apartment with a kitchen, and there are restaurants, bars, a pool, spa and playroom in the building.

Sälens Högfjällshotell is a characterful mountain hotel rather than a modern apartment block. Breakfast is included, and there’s a wellness centre, several places to eat and drink, and even a nightclub. You’re based up at Högfjället rather than directly beneath Hundfjället, so choose it for the hotel and the evenings as much for the skiing.

Whichever you choose, you will be able to self-cater properly should you choose. Tempo Hundfjället is a fully-stocked grocery with an emphasis on local and organic produce and bread from its own bakery. There are two larger supermarkets a short hop away in Tandådalen too.

Après ski in Hundfjället

Après isn’t Hundfjället’s strongest hand. There are lodge bars and restaurants, and you can widen the net into Tandådalen, but you won’t find the same buzz here that Stöten or Kläppen generate.

Food in Hundfjället is good. Frö is the standout restaurant of any resort we offer in Sälen, and not just a “good for a ski resort” way! People talk about it as a seriously good dinner in its own right. Joängets Fjällgård is a bit more intimate with a traditional feel. The SkiStar Lodge restaurants are handy but less consistent.

Activities off the slopes in Hundfjället

Hundfjället definitely feels like a Swedish holiday rather than another week in the Alps.

Snowmobiling is an obvious activity to try. Guided family safaris set off from Hundfjället, need no experience, and run through the valley towards Tandådalen, climbing above the treeline when conditions allow, with some tours pausing at a little hut for waffles and fika.

Dog sledding is available across the wider Sälen area too, including tours where you drive your own team of huskies.

And don’t forget Trollskogen. It’s technically skiing, but treat it as an experience. Children ski through the forest past trolls, wooden figures, sounds and lighting, finishing near Trollens Fäbod, where there are children’s activities and shows on selected days.
