Klappen Ski Holidays

Ski holidays in Kläppen are easy to underrate, but that would be a mistake. It doesn’t have Stöten’s strongest pistes, Hundfjället’s Väggen and tree skiing, or Lindvallen’s huge activity infrastructure. But ask the people who ski Sälen year after year and Kläppen comes up as the best-run of the lot.

It’s compact, independent and sheltered, with a gondola, beautifully prepared pistes and a genuinely world-class snowpark. Most of all, the mountain has been laid out intelligently, and for a family where everyone actually likes skiing, that makes Kläppen a great all-rounder in Sälen.

Why choose Kläppen

Different members of a family can ski different runs and keep arriving back at the same lift. Children can progress without the whole group trekking across the resort, stronger skiers can find more challenge, and teenagers can vanish into the park. It’s an independent resort, so it feels far more coherent than a multi-base area like Lindvallen.

The gondola is a bigger deal than it sounds, too. When it’s minus fifteen, putting a cold six-year-old inside a warm cabin for the ride back up, rather than onto another exposed chairlift is great.

Skiing in Kläppen

Kläppen has a reputation among Swedish skiers for the best-groomed pistes in Sälen. Stöten has the better terrain for a strong skier, but for sheer quality of preparation and corduroy, Kläppen is hard to top. There are 41 pistes and 22 lifts, plus 37km of cross-country trails.

Kläppen’s mountain isn’t tall, and a strong skier will occasionally wish a good run kept going a little longer. The off-piste is weaker than at Hundfjället or Stöten, too. But then there’s the Kläppen Snowpark, which is a great draw for teenagers and freestyle skiers. It’s one of the resort’s defining features, backed up by the Kläppen Arena and training airbags.

Ski accommodation in Kläppen

We offer two places to stay in Kläppen, both ski-in/ski-out and both in the heart of the resort. The choice comes down to hotel-style convenience against traditional self-catering.

Hotel Kurbits is the pick for having everything on the doorstep. Despite the name, it’s really a smart apartment hotel. The family apartments have their own kitchens, but breakfast is served at the Halster Bar & Bistro, with lunch and dinner there too if you’d rather not cook. The location is a real draw, right at Tranantorget beside the gondola, children’s ski area and ski school, with hire, shops and restaurants around you, and each apartment has its own ski locker with boot dryers.

Tranangårdarna Apartments are the choice if you’d rather keep it independent. They include your own apartment and kitchen, still right in the middle of Kläppen. Self-catering is easy here, with an ICA supermarket in the resort, plus a bakery, pizzeria and restaurants so you needn’t cook every night.

Après ski in Kläppen

Après is better than many expect. Halster Bar & Bistro is the centre of it, with lively après every afternoon from 3 to 5pm and regular live music. For dinner there’s reasonable breadth across Halster, Brasseriet, Toppstugan, Tranan and simpler spots, enough choice to see out a week.

Activities off the slopes in Kläppen

Kläppen isn’t trying to out-do Lindvallen on indoor entertainment. There are guided snowmobile tours, snowshoeing on the Trollsterleden, sledging evenings and Spa Kurbits with its sauna and snow room.

The cross-country is the standout, and it’s substantial: 37km of prepared classic and skating tracks, including the 13km Älvspåret from Kläppentorget, floodlit until 10pm, and the Toppspåret up onto the mountain, with the gondola ride included on the right trail pass.
