Myrkdalen ski holidays combine some of Europe’s heaviest snowfall with a spectacular setting in the mountains of Western Norway. Around five metres of snow falls here each year, covering 22 pistes and some excellent off-piste terrain, while the fjords around Flåm and Nærøyfjord are within easy reach.
It’s a small resort, so strong skiers looking to cover huge distances should look elsewhere. Come to Myrkdalen for wide, quiet runs, lots of powder, and a compact ski village right beside the slopes.
Take a day off skiing and you can head to Flåm, ride the famous railway and cruise through UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord.
For beginners, families, powder skiers and anyone who values snow and empty pistes over hundreds of kilometres of interconnected runs, Myrkdalen is a very tempting choice.

Why choose Myrkdalen
Myrkdalen gets around five metres a year and local tourism material describes it as a “powder paradise”. The ski area only reaches 1,060m, which looks low by Alpine standards, but Western Norway has no shortage of snowfall.
It’s also compact. Myrkdalen Hotel, the main lifts and the large beginner area are all near to the centre of the village.
Skiing in Myrkdalen
Myrkdalen has 22 pistes and nine lifts, including two six-seater chairlifts. Most of the pistes are wide and open, and there’s a large dedicated beginner area at the bottom of the mountain with a magic carpet, two drag lifts and four green runs.
That makes Myrkdalen good for beginners. There’s somewhere unintimidating to learn, but you can then progress onto proper runs too.
Intermediates get blue and red runs and, because this isn’t a huge international ski area, the pistes can be quiet.
For advanced skiers, Myrkdalen has genuine freeride terrain, tree skiing and powder skiing. There’s even an avalanche-transceiver training area.
There are terrain parks and ski-cross too, although freestyle isn’t as central to Myrkdalen’s identity as it is in Geilo.
Ski accommodation in Myrkdalen
There are only two choices in our programme, and both keep you close to the skiing.
Myrkdalen Hotel is ski-in/ski-out, with the lifts and beginner area immediately outside, plus three restaurants, two bars and playrooms inside.
Myrkdalen Apartments give you more space and the flexibility of self-catering.
Après ski in Myrkdalen
Myrkdalen is small and so is après.
Pudder is the dedicated après-ski venue beside Myrkdalen Hotel, with DJs and parties on selected dates. There’s also Salto Lobby Bar for something quieter and Kamben Café & Bar, which serves local beers alongside coffee and lighter food.
Food is better than you might expect from such a small resort. Restaurant Nuten is the smarter option, while Tunet does stone-baked pizzas topped with local ingredients.
Activities off the slopes in Myrkdalen
Cross-country skiing starts right in the village. There are more than 30km of prepared trails, so this is an easy place to try it.
Dog sledding is another highlight. The trips run on a 4km trail beside Myrkdalsvatnet and adults and children over 12 can have a go at driving their own team.
You can also go snowshoeing to a wilderness camp, try ski touring or swap snow for steam in the mountain sauna.
