Geilo is a popular ski resort located in the municipality of Hol, in the county of Viken, Norway. Situated approximately 250 kilometres northwest of Oslo, Geilo is known for its stunning natural beauty and excellent skiing conditions. Situated in the south of Norway and on the railway line from Bergen to Oslo is the ski resort of Geilo. A small resort at 800m, Geilo is completely different to a ski resort in the Alps.
The resort centre has managed to maintain Norwegian charm, and Ski Line can offer log cabins, forest chalets, self catered apartments and half board hotels here which make up the majority of the accommodation available.
There are a total of 40 runs in the ski resort of Geilo, served by 20 lifts; a mixture of draglifts and 2 or 4 seat chair lifts. The runs vary in difficulty, with something for all levels of skier.
Families are well suited in Geilo, with a well run ski school providing lessons for all levels and ages, and lots of activities for children.
Geilo offers diverse skiing terrain suitable for all skill levels, making it an ideal destination for both beginners and experienced skiers. The resort has a total of 39 slopes spread across two main ski areas: Geilolia and Slaatta. The slopes cover a wide range of difficulties, from gentle and easy runs for beginners to challenging black runs for advanced skiers.
Geilo provides modern ski facilities and infrastructure. The resort has a comprehensive lift system, including chairlifts, T-bar lifts, and magic carpets, ensuring easy access to the slopes. Additionally, there are ski schools and rental shops where visitors can receive lessons, rent equipment, and get assistance from professional instructors.

With two different ski areas in Geilo and a ski bus linking the two, there are plenty of long, wide runs for you to cruise down and improve on your technique. You can also ski through the trees, and if you’re feeling particularly confident and up for a challenge you can have a go at a mogul field.
Five black runs reside in the Norwegian ski resort of Geilo, but it’s not an advanced or expert skier’s ideal resort. However you can head to nearby Hemsedal, an hour’s drive away, or try out the Norwegian’s new favourite type of skiing, telemarking.
Snowboarding in Geilo is extensive, with the runs catering for any level of boarder and the resort boasting Scandinavia’s only super-pipe. There are also half pipes, two snowboard parks and lots of jumps to test your skills or simply have some fun.
Geilo has dedicated areas for snowboarding and freestyle skiing. The Geilolia Snow Park is designed specifically for snowboarders and features jumps, rails, boxes, and other elements for freestyle tricks and manoeuvres. The park caters to riders of different skill levels, from beginners to advanced riders looking for more challenging features.
Geilo is renowned for its extensive cross-country skiing opportunities. The region offers over 550 kilometres of well-groomed cross-country trails, suitable for classic and skate skiing. These trails traverse through beautiful forests, picturesque valleys, and frozen lakes, providing a scenic and peaceful experience for Nordic skiing enthusiasts.
The resort also offers a variety of accommodation options, including hotels, cabins, and apartments, catering to different budgets and preferences.
Geilo at night isn’t hugely lively during the week, with a small selection of restaurants and bars, mainly in the hotels. It gets busier and more atmospheric at weekends however; with bars such as the ‘Little Blue Bar’ offering live music where will you enjoy a few drinks.
Beyond skiing, Geilo offers a range of other winter activities to enjoy. Visitors can go snowshoeing, ice climbing, ice fishing, or take a dog sledging tour through the snowy landscapes. There are also opportunities for sleigh rides, snowmobiling, and ice skating.
