Why choose Canillo

Choose Canillo if you’re looking for a more tranquil alternative to the busier Grandvalira resorts. Set at 1,530m, it combines traditional Andorran character with easy access to the 210km Grandvalira ski area via a modern gondola. The village is compact and atmospheric, with stone buildings, a historic chapel, family-run restaurants, and cosy bars. Its standout attraction is the Palau de Gel ice arena, offering skating, bowling and even ice karting. Without loud clubs or nightlife, Canillo appeals to families, couples, and skiers who prefer a quieter ski holiday.

Skiing in Canillo

Canillo’s local ski area is small, gentle and designed with families in mind, centred around the Mont Magic Family Park at El Forn (2,000m). While the sector itself offers only a handful of runs, the gondola links directly into the wider Grandvalira slopes, giving access to 200+km of pistes. Experienced skiers can quickly ski across to El Tarter and Soldeu, while beginners enjoy quiet surroundings and easy runs.

Beginners skiing

Canillo is one of the best Grandvalira villages for beginners and younger children. The local slopes feature around seven marked runs, mostly green and blue, served by the Canillo gondola. At the top station lies the Mont Magic Family Park, a themed learning area with gentle slopes, character trails and Andorra’s longest zipline. Many first-time skiers return to the village by gondola, as the red Isard run is narrow and only suitable when snow conditions are favourable.

Intermediate skiing

Intermediates will find limited terrain directly in the Canillo sector, but the resort’s strength lies in its access. From El Forn, you can easily reach broader networks of blue and red pistes in El Tarter and Soldeu. The scenic red Forn (or Isard) run offers pleasant, uncrowded carving when snow coverage is good. Once in the heart of Grandvalira, intermediates benefit from miles of confidence-boosting pistes stretching as far as Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa.

Advanced skiing

Advanced skiers will not find challenging terrain within Canillo itself, but the Grandvalira area still provides plenty to explore. Canillo serves as a peaceful, good-value base for experts who prefer quiet evenings and are happy commuting to tougher terrain.

Snowboarding

Snowboarders staying in Canillo enjoy all of Grandvalira’s terrain with minimal crowds. While immediate Canillo slopes are mellow and ideal for beginners, more experienced riders can quickly reach the excellent pistes of El Tarter and Soldeu. Freestylers will want to head to the El Tarter Snowpark, one of the best freestyle areas in southern Europe, reachable via a straightforward connection.

Family ski holidays in Canillo

Canillo is one of the most family-focused bases in Grandvalira. Mont Magic is a highlight for young children, offering themed slopes, entertainers, gentle progression terrain and the region’s longest child-friendly themed run. The Palau de Gel adds year-round entertainment with ice skating, swimming, bowling and a café. Accommodation is generally better value than in Soldeu or Pas, and self-catering options keep budgets sensible. The village is compact, quiet and safe, making it an ideal choice for parents.
