Kranjska Gora is located in Slovenia, on the borders of Italy and Austria. It’s a perfect destination for economy minded skiers looking for value for money and quieter slopes than in the Alps. Its season is shorter than other destinations as most of the skiing is below 2000m. Kranjska Gora is a perfect choice for beginners and families wanting to ski together.

The village of Kranjska Gora is set in the picturesque Julian Alps, its hotels are all within easy walking distance of the lifts. There are shops bars, a nightclub and casino, but it’s the friendly locals that make this ski resort special. The nearest airport is Klagenfurt 1 hour, Salzburg is 3 hours and Zagreb is 2.5 hours.

The ski range is between 810m and 1570m covering 30 km of piste that are best suited to beginners and nervous intermediate skiers. There are 15 blue runs, 5 red and 3 black. The slopes are tree-lined and mostly gentle sloping. There are 6 chair lifts and 12 drags. Queues are not an issue and the slopes are covered by good snowmaking. In addition, there is 40km of cross-country skiing trails.

Why Ski in Kranjska Gora?

Slovenia’s most well known and main ski resort Kranjska Gora is set in beautiful surroundings within the Zgornjesavska Valley, alongside the Julian Alps. Located near to the Italian and Austrian borders, it makes for a great Alpine ski resort.

Known for its winter sports and World Cup races, Kranjska Gora has a variety of runs totalling 30km. There’s also 40km of cross country trails to explore if you want to admire the scenery. At an altitude of 809m and skiing up to 1570m, it’s perhaps not as high as a lot of resorts in the Alps, but the snow conditions are still good with lots of snow making across the pistes.

All the skiing is done on the Vitranc Mountain which is served by 14 drag lifts and 4 chair lifts. The majority of the accommodation in Kranjska Gora is in half board hotels, some located slope side and some towards the centre of town. All are convenient for access to the slopes.

Ski schools in Kranjska Gora are good and the nursery slopes conveniently located at the bottom of the pistes are a great place to learn the basics and hopefully progress onto one of many blue runs in the resort.
