Why Ski in Sleva?
Selva and its satellite village Ortisei are the biggest names in the Italian Dolomites, and the resort deserves its reputation as a world-class ski destination. Based at 1,563m, with skiing between 1,440m and 3,342m, Selva sits in the Val Gardena area, which offers 175km of pistes. Upgrade to the full Dolomiti Superski pass and you can access an incredible 1,220km of skiing.
Selva is the larger of the two resorts, a roadside town with plenty of facilities, while Ortisei is more laid back and has three toboggan runs, one of which is over 6km long — a big appeal for families. This area is also one of the most scenic ski regions in the Alps, especially at sunset when the Dolomites turn pink.
The skiing here suits all levels. Beginners will find excellent nursery slopes in Selva, intermediates can enjoy an unbelievable quantity of fast cruising runs right on the doorstep, and advanced skiers can make the most of the vast Superski area. The local Val Gardena pass covers 175km of pistes (30% blue, 60% red and 10% black), including wooded runs that lead back into the village.
Selva lies on the famous Sella Ronda circuit, giving perfect access to this impressive ski area. The circular tour connects Selva with Corvara, Arabba and Canazei, and can be completed in a day even by lower intermediates. Stick to the main route and, with no delays, it can be done in as little as three hours.
The village itself sits at 1,565m and retains Tyrolean charm from its Austrian past, with an attractive church and Alpine-style buildings. Many locals still speak German, and the mix of Austrian and Italian traditions is reflected in the excellent food, wine and warm hospitality. Selva is also known for offering good value in its bars, restaurants and hotels.
Ski Line offers the best hotels here, ranging from 3* to 4*, mostly half board, along with a small selection of apartments and a very limited number of fully catered chalets sleeping 9 to 14 guests. Chalets in Italy are rare and demand is high, so we strongly recommend early booking.
We continually receive great feedback from clients about the mountain restaurants, many of whom say the food is excellent and far better value compared to other major ski resorts.
The Skiing In Selva
Beginners Skiing In Selva
The village nursery slopes are excellent, convenient, and safe, and normally kept in tip top conditions for beginners to master the basics, but for the best progression slopes you would be better taking a bus to Alpes Di Siusi.
Intermedates Skiing In Selva
There is plenty for all levels of intermediate skiers in Selva even some of the black’s wont cause concerns for better intermediates. We recommend taking the full area pass and doing the circuit around the Sella Ronda, this should keep you busy all week long.
Advanced Skiing In Selva
The runs you are most likely to enjoy will be the race runs which offer fast decents, that are always kept in best conditions for the Italian ski teams, but can be closed on some days for practices. The off piste skiing is limited in Selva but by taking the full area pass there are some great sections that will thrill.
Après Ski In Selva
As the lifts start to close the mountain restaurants get busy with many playing music to help entice you in, some even with live bands. Later on the streets can be quieter but serveral bars will have DJ’s playing until around 1:00 am. The main night Club in Selva is Dali which plays dance music until early in the morning and tends to attract a younger crowd.
Activities Off The Slopes In Selva
There is a good sports centre but you can also try snow shoeing, Tobogganing and bowling.
