Oberau Ski Resort Guide

Why Ski in Oberau?

The ski resort of Oberau is the smallest of the 3 main villages in this Wildshonau Valley. It is just down the road from Niederau and they are all linked by a bus service. It is a very traditional village with lots of unspoilt surroundings. All of the buildings are picturesque and chalet style which makes this a very pretty base. With just a couple of easy blues and one black run you will have to travel to either Niederau or Auffach to find some more pistes and the good bus service will take you there.

Niederau also has a chair lift a few minutes walk away which will take you to Lanerkopfl which has some good black runs for the advance skiers.

Beginners skiing in Oberau

Beginners in Oberau have a choice of areas, for those complete beginners you can start at the bottom of the gondola at Niederau to gain confidence and once you feel more brave you can try the nursery area further up the mountain on the easy blue runs there.

Intermediates skiing in Oberau

For the intermediate skiers in Oberau the Schatzberg ski area from Auffach has a lot more red runs. The few red and blue runs above Niederau are very good but they will be done relatively quickly.

Advanced skiing in Oberau

There are several black runs on the Niederau side of the valley but they are all quite short and not too challenging. The off piste in the area is great, if you head over to Schatzberg you can find some areas which will be ideal for advanced skiers.

Snowboarding in Oberau

The snowboarding in Oberau is best suited to intermediates. There are some drag lifts which tend to put the beginners off a little. Auffach has a half pipe and a snowboard park for the freestylers.

Après ski in Oberau

For the après ski you will need to travel to Niederau,  there you will find a very relaxed and causal feel. There is something for everyone in Niederau, it has the nice quiet bars and restaurants for families and then the slightly more lively bars too. The disco and cave bar is a popular place for the young party people as it goes on till late. There is one pub in Oberau where there is a disco, but this tends to be quiet as most people have either gone back to their accommodation or gone to Niederau.

Activities off the slopes in Oberau

There is plenty for non skiers in Oberau, but again you will need to get the bus across to Niederau. There is bowling and tobogganing or you can go on a moonlight sleigh ride. During the day you can go on a horse riding trip and there are lots of organised walks. Swimming pools in the resort can be found in the hotels and used for a small fee.
