Ski Holidays in Hochgurgl

Hochgurgl and Obergurgl share the same ski area and are two of Austria’s highest glacial ski resorts. Hochgurgl is the higher of the two, located at a very snow sure altitude of 2150m, that’s nearly the same height as Tignes In France. This year for the first time your 6-day lift pass covers skiing in James Bonds favourite glacial ski resort of Solden, adding a further 145km of skiing to the 110km available at Hochgurgl and Obergurgl.

The skiing in Hochgurgl is suitable for all levels of skier and snowboarder. The local area offers 35km of blue pistes, 55km of Red and 20 km of the steeper Black runs. The slopes face North and West, so snow reliability is good from November to May most years.

Nightlife is a little low key compared to many Austrian ski resorts and is mainly limited to activities around the hotels and bars.

Hochgurgl and Obergurgl are the places to visit if you are serious about skiing on Austria’s best snow.

Why Ski in Hochgurgl?

The ski resort of Hochgurgl is situated just above Untergurgl and Obergurgl. This village is tucked away which gives it a great relaxed feel. Generally a good winter holiday base, you are linked to Obergurgl by a gondola and a good bus service. The lifts in Hochgurgl are relatively unknown which makes the ski area nice and un crowded. The snow is pretty much guaranteed from December to the end of April and with lots of sun there is some great skiing to be done here. The main slopes are high but gentle and are served by some fast lifts and chairs with 2 gondolas. The slopes that are further out are served by drag lifts. The views from the highest points are quite spectacular.

Beginners skiing in Hochgurgl

The nursery slopes in Hochgurgl for beginners are a short walk from the hotels. From here you can progress to easy blue runs. There are also nursery slopes in Obergurgl but these are harder to progress from to the next stage.

Intermediates skiing in Hochgurgl

Intermediates will find the slopes in Hochgurgl to be bigger and better than the neighbouring town of Obergurgl. They are easier and much better for cruising down the mountain and at a good pace. For the more advanced intermediates head to the right of the mountain, Vorderer Wurmkogllift, this is a much more challenging part.

Advanced skiing in Hochgurgl

The more advanced skiers may find this area lacking in challenging runs. There are a few black runs in both areas which are relatively easy. The off piste skiing can offer a challenge and of course high up on the Glacier you can do some ski touring with guides.

Snowboarding in Hochgurgl

Snowboarding in Hochgurgl has been slow on the uptake but in more recent years it has become more popular. There is a terrain park and half pipe on Festkogl. The beginner snowboarder can cover a lot of the area without having to use the drag lifts and the more advanced boarders can take the opportunity to travel off piste.

Après ski in Hochgurgl

The Après Hochgurgl is quiet, with a few bars, some of which play live music. The livelier bars can be found n Obergurgl. There are plenty of superb restaurants with fine cuisine and the bars have a great party atmosphere, head for the Krumpn’s Stadl Barn later on in the evening as this is said to be the liveliest bar with live music and plenty of party people.

Activities off the slopes in Hochgurgl

For the non skiers in Hochgurgl you may need to travel across to Obergurgl to find things to do. There are swimming pools, saunas, whirlpools and steam baths in some of the hotels and also indoor bowling. For those who still want to be outside there is a natural ice rink, curling and some nice winter hiking paths to wander on.
