Filzmoos is popular with families looking for a small ski area with a traditional alpine valley location surrounded by the Austrian Alps.
Filzmoos is one of the villages making up the larger “Ski Amade” ski area which covers 860km of pistes. The local area around Filzmoos is small and offers just 14km of pistes so is small compared to other ski resorts but ideal for families looking to ski together.
Filzmoos has a small ski area of its own with easy links to several other ski areas in the area for which a collective ski pass is available. Filzmoos is an ideal choice for beginners and intermediates.
Beginners can use a special learners lift and slopes in the village centre and served by the Grossberg chairlift – so there’s no need to master the draglift on day one. The largest sector of the skiing can be found by the Grossberg where intermediates will find the Mooslehen chair takes them over to the village of Neuberg in the next valley.
On the other side of the village, the six person Papageno gondola accesses the Moosalm slopes which have some of the best descents, including the one black down from the Schneekanone Hut. More advanced skiers will probably prefer to explore the other skiing opportunities nearby including the Dachstein glacier with its year-round skiing and neighbouring resorts like Flachau, home of downhill skiing champion Hermann Maier (AKA the Herminator).
We offer a choice of some of the best 3 and 4* H/B hotels in Filzmoos, some available as a package with flights and transfers included. We also offer some hotels on accommodation only, some of these include the cost of the ski pass and offer excellent value for money.
All our Filzmoos ski holidays are backed by 🛡️ ABTA protection, 🏆 award-winning service, and a ⭐ 4.9-star Feefo rating.
The small ski resort of Filzmoos lies in Austria’s Sportwelt Amade ski area. It sits at 1055m and has 32km of pistes. Being a small resort, Filzmoos boasts a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and is therefore ideal for beginners and families alike.
This charming village offers guests a choice of lovely self catered apartments and pretty half board hotels, all set in beautiful scenery and overlooked by the Bischofsmutze Mountain and Dachstein Glacier.
Filzmoos is home to uncrowded, unintimidating slopes, with almost 100% snow making coverage and cute mountain restaurants, it’s great for skiers and boarders looking for a peaceful resort to stay in.
Nursery slopes in Filzmoos are located right in the centre of the resort, convenient for novices. To progress, a chairlift can take you to some easy slopes a bit higher up. The ski schools here are great too.
Early intermediates will enjoy the slopes above Filzmoos, however if you want more mileage or need more of a challenge, buses run a few times a week to neighbouring resorts such as Flachau, where a huge 860km can be explored throughout the region.
There’s only one black run in Filzmoos, the Papageno, but there’s also some off piste skiing to be done. If you head to nearby Flachau, the World Cup run can be enjoyed too.
Snowboarding is popular in Filzmoos, as the three local ski schools also operate snowboarding schools. Wide open runs accessed by chair lifts, and natural hits on the varied terrain provide brilliant conditions for boarders, both of beginner and intermediate levels. If you purchase a full area lift pass, there are a few terrain parks in nearby areas to try out.
A lot of the restaurants in Filzmoos are based within the hotels; however there are a few throughout the village offering both traditional and international dishes. There are cheaper restaurants for families on a budget, or high end restaurants for couples looking for a romantic evening. Some 30 bars are perhaps surprisingly lively as well, such as Happy Filzmoos and Keen-i-di.
Some fun activities are on offer here for non-skiers. A great swimming pool complex can me found in the resort and there are 50km of walking trails in the surrounding area. You can also enjoy floodlit toboggan runs and sleigh rides through the trees to experience local folk music in Unterhofalm, and for a truly magnificent time, take a hot air balloon ride above Filzmoos.
