Pronounced `U-las`, this is the largest downhill and cross-country ski centre in Finland with the greatest uplift per hour. You can now try the fantastic Arctic adventure resort of Ylläs in magical Lapland. This resort is one of the largest ski areas in Finland, uncrowded queues and a great choice of winter activities to try. The area is famous for its `blue light` in the daytime and northern lights at night. A great choice for families, Ylläs is a full service ski and sport resort.
As one of Finland’s largest ski areas, Ylläs has the country’s highest skiing points at 718m. With two main bases either side of the mountain, Ylläsjärvi and Äkäsompolo, and slopes situated a couple of miles from the resort, free bus services run to help you get around.
With a long ski season running from October through to May, ski runs spanning out through the forested landscape and frozen lakes scattering the area, Ylläs is a beautiful place to ski. The main winter months are dark a lot of the time, and the latter winter months and into spring are light almost 24 hours a day.
In the ski resort of Ylläs we offer accommodation ranging from self catered apartments in pretty log cabins to family friendly half board hotels.
Although there isn’t one main centre to the resort, there are still a few bars, restaurants and more lively clubs (mainly in hotels) dotted throughout the different areas of the resort of Ylläs. Try Julli’s Bar, Kaivohuone or the dance floor at the Akas Hotel.
As you would expect from a Finnish resort, there are fun activities to partake in such as dog sledding, snowmobile safaris and, for the really daring, an ice swim in a hole cut in a frozen river.
Typically, at the bottom of both areas of the mountain, the nursery slopes and gentle blue runs lay waiting for eager beginners to improve their snowplough turns and progress further up the mountain to perhaps more difficult runs.
Intermediate skiing in Ylläs is most common, as the majority of runs are fairly challenging red runs, with exciting off piste areas covered in perfect powder snow ideal for exploring.
There are only a few difficult black runs in the ski resort of Ylläs, but it’s home to some 330km of well groomed cross country trails, providing days of fantastic skiing taking in the stunning scenery.
Snow conditions for snowboarders are excellent, and there are 3 half pipes and 2 terrain parks for a bit of fun. As with most ski resorts in Finland however, the majority of lifts are surface lifts; draglifts and T-bars.
