Ski Holidays in Mayrhofen

Mayrhofen is a large, lively Austrian ski resort located in a flat-bottomed valley surrounded by the high peaks of the Ziller. Its one of Austria’s best-loved ski resorts and its easy to see why, an attractive village with great après ski, and high snow sure slopes with the added benefit of the nearby Hintertux glacier.

The recent upgrades to the Penken cable car from the village centre has massively improved the flow of skiers heading up the mountain. A few years ago this was a major issue and a constant cause of complaints.

Do not let the altitude of the village of Mayrhofen put you off, at 630m its sounds impossibility low, but most of the skiing is located above 1300m and the top slopes reach 3350m. The ski area covers 134km of slopes locally and the full area connected by buses and trains covers 489km of skiing.

The skiing in Mayrhofen is best suited to better intermediate and advanced skiers. Harakiri is the resorts best known black run and claims to have the steepest pitch in Europe at 78%. (32 degrees).

Nervous intermediates may find the slopes too steep, there are a few gentle blues, but if you are a good intermediate skier you will love it here.

For beginners, the nursery slopes are excellent on the Ahorn, if you are skiing with friends who already ski, they will prefer to be on the Penken side of the mountain. The problem for beginners is that the progression slopes are limited, so unless you are fit, brave and willing to push yourself, Mayrhofen may not be the best place to learn to ski.

Good snowboarders love Mayrhofen, it offers some excellent steep red runs and the off-piste options are good too.

Après ski is one of the biggest selling points for Mayrhofen, the main street is full of lively bars but the fun always starts on the slopes at the top of the Penken gondola.

Why Ski in Mayrhofen?

The ski resort of Mayrhofen has long since been a popular ski resort. It is quite a large resort boasting 157km of piste and 48 Lifts. Situated in the valley of Ziller this flat bottomed resort is popular with both groups and families due the extensive on and off piste facilities and beautiful scenery. The Penken section of the slopes can be reached by the main lift which is at one end of the main road that runs through the town, whilst at the other end you can take the cable car to the smaller Ahorn sector. There are also good buses and trains that link the other Zillertal resorts to enable everyone to get a good variety of runs with the lift pass over a weeks stay. For those cross country skiers there is a good 12 mile tail through the valley of Zell im Zillertal or you could go a little higher if the snow isn’t so good for the time of year to Vorderlanersbach which has an amazing snow sure trail.

Intermediate skiers will have more than enough choice on the slopes of Mayrhofen. Red runs are in their plenty on the Steep sided mountain, and will help you gain much confidence and are a delight for the competent intermediate skier.

Advanced skiing in Mayrhofen

There are a few harder runs in the ski resort of Mayrhofen. The off piste skiing is a must, with the fresh powder found at the top of Horbergjoch under the cable car linking Lanersbach. You can also try some of the other near by resorts which your valley lift pass will cover.
