Alta and Snowbird are the ultimate destinations for those seeking the very best in expert terrain. Famous for the vast amounts of light powder which arrive with remarkable regularity, it has everything to justify its cult status: wide bowls of soft powder, steep chutes and top tree-skiing as well as loads of great piste too.

The Alta resort is less than an hours drive from downtown Salt Lake City. Life revolves around two separate lift base areas – Albion and Wildcat – linked by a bi-directional rope tow along the valley floor. However, there are only about a dozen places to stay in the resort.

The skiing
Alta, although linked by high speed chair to Snowbird is out of bounds for snowboarders. This fact, together with big acreage and slower lifts means it’s a great place for skiers to make fresh tracks and explore the wonderful bowls and glades.

experts
Even without the Snowbird link Alta had a cult status among local experts. There are a good number of steep slopes and chutes.

intermediates
Alta’s power appeals to adventurous intermediates that are willing to try ungroomed slopes. There are good blue bowls and uncomplicated blacks to progress to.

beginners
We would not recommend this resort to beginners as it is narrowly focused, although there are some gentler slopes on the Albion side.

snowboarding
Boarding is banned, this is a skiers mountain.

après-ski
Due to the size of the resort, the après ski is usually no more than a few drinks at the hotel bar. There is a bar, The Goldminer’s Daughter, with a pool table for some entertainment.
