Obertauern ski resort information
The ski resort of Obertauern is Austria’s only purpose built resort. The high altitude offers great snow so that you can ski back to the village from the top of the mountains. The slopes circle the resort and can be accessed from 3 areas. The main part of the slopes is on the sunny side of the mountains so the views are quite stunning. The village is compact with some shops and bars and the accommodation is spread out along the main road. There are a total of 26 lifts in this ski area and 95km of piste, most are blue and red runs but there are quite a few black runs. The slopes on the less sunny south side tend to be a lot quieter and twice a week they open with floodlights for some night skiing.

The après ski in Obertauern is reasonably lively. The bars in the village are fun, and the décor is interesting. Some have a disco that will stay open for some late night dancing. The mountain restaurants are very good but can get a bit crowded during peak times.
Activities off the slopes in the ski resort of Obertauern
The non skiers in Obertauern can enjoy the large sports centre in town, this does not have a pool. There are some great walks up to Kringsalm for you to enjoy the stunning views and trips can be organised locally to Salzburg.
Beginners skiing in the ski resort of Obertauern
The nursery slopes in Obertauern for beginners are very good, a bit spread around but a great place to start out. Once your confidence has increased you will want to take the Schaidberg chair to the higher altitude beginner’s area and from there the progression to the next stage of blue runs is a nice and easy run down.
Intermediates skiing in the ski resort of Obertauern
Intermediates will love this area of Obertauern. If you are an early intermediate then you’re best off staying on the lower part of the mountain whilst you build up your confidence you can then join the more advanced intermediates on the harder runs further up.
Advanced skiing in the ski resort of Obertauern
For the more advanced skiers there are some nice steep black runs once you’re at the top of the Gamsleiten chair. If you want to go on an off piste run this is a great challenge but a guide is recommended.
Snowboarding in the ski resort of Obertauern
The boarding in Obertauern is generally good for all levels. The wide open terrain of this area is easily accessible so all levels are able to get around and try all the different parts. There is a terrain park near the Kehkopfbahn lift which is great for all the freestyle boarders.
