Bad Kleinkirchheim is also a spa resort, so after a great day’s skiing why not relax in the thermal spring baths, with outside pool temperatures of 36°C. The town has mainly chalet style buildings with sloping roofs but is very spread out along the valley, although a ski bus links the main lifts. The thermal Romerbad spa has been renovated in the 2006/2007 season so it has a dozen new saunas and outdoor pool.
the skiing
The slopes in Bad Kleinkirchheim tend to be shady, but are linked to the sunny neighbouring village of St Oswald, which tends to be better for chidren and beginners, especially in the afternoon. Also, the piste map doesn’t mark out all the mountainside restaurants and so there is some exploring to do to find the best ones.
advanced
The resort has little to keep experts interested for a week. The best black run is the Franz Klammer World Cup run, which goes all the way from Strohsack to the gondola base. Off piste tours are available, though they involve some hiking.
intermediates
Virtually all the slopes in Bad Kleinkirchheim and the nearby St Oswald are ideal for good intermediates, 75% of the slopes are graded red and many are long and wide. The new quad lift makes it easier to get to the long red runs in St Oswald.
beginners
There are nursery slopes in both areas of Bad Kleinkirchheim and St Oswald. There is also an easy blue run at the top of Nockalm and one that goes to the bottom of the gondola.
snowboarding
All the main lifts are gondolas or chair, but there are also a lot of T bars and no terrain park at all.
après ski
A lot of the fun takes place in the hotels, but there are a few bars as well. The most popular places are at the bottom of the gondola. There are also superb spa facilities to be enjoyed off the slopes. |
