The ski resort of Formigal is one of Spain’s largest. Set in the Pyrenees, this resort boasts 137km of runs, varying in difficulty. Although probably best for the intermediate skier, there are no less than 38 black runs available for advanced skiers to try out.
A purpose-built resort, the Formigal ski area is served by a total of 22 lifts; the majority of them drag lifts. With an uplift of over 21,000 skiers per hour, and a great selection of green, blue, red and black runs, this ski resort is great for families and big groups alike.
Half board hotels in Formigal dominate, and offer great bases to access the ski slopes, with most served by a ski bus to the lifts. The ski school in Formigal is well run, and snow conditions, being at an altitude of 2200m, are generally good, but if not then over 100 snow cannons are spread across the ski area when needed.

For a young and lively party, or anyone that likes to enjoy atmospheric après ski, then Formigal has a fantastic selection. Lots of restaurants serve local Spanish food and some Tyrolean cuisine, while plenty of bars and nightclubs provide a dance floor and cheap drinks to while away the evenings.

Spa facilities, snowmobiling, dog-sledding and snowshoeing are all available to do in Formigal, along with swimming in some of the hotels or taking a trip out for a spot of wine-tasting.

Both Anayet and Sextas ski areas in Formigal provide great nursery slopes to reassure beginners before they proceed to some gentle blue runs. Magic carpet lifts are also a helpful to boost self confidence.

The brilliant network of lifts serving the different areas is fantastic for intermediates as they allow for lots of exploration and fast skiing. Some runs in Sextas are floodlit at night, and runs are generally wide and meandering, excellent for whatever style or pace of skiing you choose.

Advanced skiing in the ski resort of Formigal is very good, with 38 challenging black runs, lots of off piste areas and even heli-skiing for those looking to test themselves to the limit. Perhaps the most difficult and exhilarating black run is the Tubo Superior.

With the extensive ski area, snowboarders will be in their element. There are a lot of drag lifts, but there are also a number of chair lifts to take you to the main pistes. A six seat chair is next to the Cantal Terrain Park, and there are also some runs with bumps if you’re up for a challenge. |
